How To Repair A Cast-Iron Pipe

Cast-iron drain pipes may behave unpredictably. Sometimes a small part of the pipe will start to break or the joint will start to leak, even though most pipes are strong. If this is the case, you can easily make repairs. However, if the cast iron pipe is damaged in several places, it is most economical to replace it with PVC pipe.

This is a job for a professional to do the cast iron pipe replacement. When working with cast iron, keep in mind that the pipe is very heavy and must be attached to the frame members with special brackets.

Never interfere with these brackets; if a person lost weight, the long section of the tube could collapse. Also, some of the older cast iron joints have been sealed with molten tin, but don't worry. It poses no threat to your health, as only waste flows through the pipes.

If you need to patch a joint, expect to spend an hour doing it. If you just patch the holes, it will take less time. Before you start, make sure the whistle is well cared for.

If water or an unpleasant odor is coming from the old lead joint, use a cold chisel and hammer to gently tap the lead back into the joint. Use a wire brush and rag to remove corrosion.

If the pipe is rusting or leaking, clean the hole with a wire brush and fill the hole with a two-part epoxy pipe. Check the manufacturer's instructions for drying times.
