Tips For Dealing With Fear Aggression in Your Dog

Dogs are intelligent animals and often use their instinct and previous experiences to help them learn. But this can lead to problems when they develop fear aggression, which is when a dog develops aggressive behaviours due to the fear of something. Click here to learn more about dealing with fear aggression in dogs.

1. Understand why your dog is behaving in a fearful or aggressive manner.

Understanding the root cause of your dog's fear of aggression can help you to address the behaviour more effectively. Is your dog reacting to current events or past experiences? Is he feeling threatened by other dogs or people in general? Once you know what is triggering his fear of aggression, you can start to address the behaviour.

2. Establish clear boundaries with your dog.

If your dog is displaying fearful or aggressive behaviour towards people or other animals, setting boundaries will help to prevent him from engaging in these behaviours towards others. Make sure that your boundaries are clearly communicated to your dog and always be consistent with them.

3. Train your dog properly using positive reinforcement techniques.

Using positive reinforcement techniques such as treats, petting, praise and verbal commands can help to train your dog not to react aggressively towards others. Always use positive reinforcement when training your dog – never use punishment as a form of discipline!

4. Take care of yourself too!

It's important to remember that while it's helpful to have someone else around who can handle fearful or aggressive behaviour in our dogs, it's also important for us to take care of ourselves too – especially if we're going  to be working with our dogs on a regular basis. Make sure to exercise and eat a healthy diet to maintain your own physical health and resilience.
